Red Oni Fanart

Hey! I’m Savannah Tschirgi and I make 3D characters for games. I really enjoy making stylized characters with bright, bold colors. I'm from the United States and work remotely at a studio called chance6. I also do freelance work and lots of personal projects!

My Oni piece was based on the original concept by Forest and created in Zbrush using the Zbrush to Photoshop plugin to render it. Since she is just a sculpt and not a game character, I was able to sculpt, polypaint, and render to get some nice images out relatively quickly. I love doing small personal projects like this because I can make a lot more things quickly since 3D art takes so long. It was the first time I had tried out the Zbrush to Photoshop workflow and I really enjoyed it! I used this technique by Danny Mac 3D to light and composite the images in Photoshop.

I wanted her mouth to be a really big selling point. I tried to work outside of my comfort zone by “breaking” her expression and facial anatomy more than I was used to doing in my character work with Chance6. That meant doing things like blowing up the eyes, completely shifting where I normally keep the mouth all the way to one side, flattening her Cupid’s bow, and keeping the bridge of her nose very flat. I’ve started to feel more comfortable with pushing my characters away from “Overwatch” and deeper down the stylized rabbit hole while trying to develop what makes my work unique.

Some advice for beginners would be to

just work on what you love and not worry so much about being able to do everything in the pipeline.

Even though most of 3D art is technical (maybe 70% technical, 30% actual art haha) it's very important to me that I have as much fun as I can during every step of the process. That means optimizing my workflow and looking for solutions when I feel frustrated. I treat frustration as a sign that something needs to change. I spend a lot of time creating 3D art so it's really important to me that I'm having a good time while making it!
